Trend or Aberration?

1) Certainly one could not look at one night's games in the NHL as a trend, but tonight's results certainly must of had many of the so-called experts scratching their heads. The Stanley Cup Champs AND the president's Trophy winners both lost to team that most prognosticators(including us at FAUXRUMORS) had as bottom feeders. Here are some examples of tonight's surprising results:

  • NY Islanders 6 Buffalo 4. This was Buffalo's home opener. They presented the President's trophy. They were playing the 'lowly Islanders', the team many figured to be at the bottom of the conference. The Isles hadn't won in Buffalo since February 27, 2004. The Sabres lost Briere and Drury, but were penciled in for a playoff spot. Most figured the Isles would struggle for goals. Not so tonight, with their free agents leading the way Mike Comrie had 4 points. Buffalo didn't miss their lost free agents offense, but they could use someone to help kill penalties as the Isles scored 3 times with the man advantage!

  • Columbus 4 Anaheim 0. The Cup champs are shut out by a team many thought might be at the bottom of the entire league this year. A team many said had the worst defense in the NHL. To be fair the Ducks have already had a brutal schedule. Going over to Europe to play those two silly games with the Kings this past weekend, then playing their second game in North America when many teams didn't even start their seasons until tonight. Fatigue was evident, but the result was still not what most would have expected.

  • Washington 3- Atlanta 1. Not as a huge of an upset as the other two, but the reigning division champs, at home for their opener. Raising the banner, the Thrashers would presumably be sky high and ready to put on a good performance for the home fans. Not so, as the Caps out worked and out scored the home Thrashers. Perhaps a harbinger of things to come?

  • Carolina 4- Pittsburgh 1 Perhaps the result isn't a shock, but the ease in which the Canes handled the highly touted Pens was surprising. The elder Staal was again, 'The good Staal', with Eric getting his 2nd and third tallies of the young season. Already Fleury appears shaky. getting yanked in favour of Danny Sabourin in the third. The Pens only managed 1 goal late on a 5-3 PP. Sid was held pointless.

2) Certainly it would be silly/premature to make any conclusions based upon tonight's results, but it certainly shows why only an idiot would bet on hockey!

Two in a row for the good guys here on the island. You still think we're an aberration?

1) Thanks Hawk for finally admitting what most of us already kind of suspected.
2) Trotz: we will allow you to glow in the enjoyment of your sabres sweep. It was impressive. It will take a bit more before we're sold. If they have a better record than Buffalo but the holidays we'll gladly relive this post and eat the appropriate crow.

I hope to take you up on your challenge. I don't know if we can stay ahead of Buffalo all year but if we stay in theplayoff race I'll be happy.
By the way my stolen blog was back again. I see you erased it, but it pisses me off that nut job still feels the need to imitate me. What a loser!

1) Hey Trotz, like the new picture. We doubt it'll help differentiate you from the guy who stole your identity last spring, he'll probably copy and us it too, but its a nice change/touch
2) Looking forward to seeing an unlikely match up of undefeated teams tomorrow with the isles playing the Caps!

Ok Lovebirds, that's enough... Here is a hockey related comment from a non-fraud... Antz truly exists!

An interesting weekend of upsets, certainly, but how could any intelligent person chalk this up to anything other than "upsets?" The Islanders, for example, will NOT go 82-0... Great prediction, huh? They'll probably lose to the Caps today, in fact... Columbus played well vs. the Champs, but they will no doubt end the season out of the playoffs... Does anyone think Sergei Fedorov "is back?" As for Washington and Carolina, they are decent teams - any time they win, it really isn't an upset...

An aside - How about J.R. with a couple of egotistical/self-centered goals? LOL

And finally - YES, Janet Jones-Tocchet-Gretzky IS an idiot!

Hey everybody, wouldn't it be funny if Faux were Hawk? What a great scheme THAT would be... LOL!!!

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) Hey Antz: Isles won't go 82-0, but IF either the Caps OR the Isles will be 3-0 after today. No one would have thought that was likely before the season!
2) Very funny Antz. We can say 100% assuredly that we are NOT Hawk! LOL Guess the Hockeynutz site is dying so he's bored and going to start using his stolen ID's again. We're not concerned, and none of the good folks who are back blogging again should be worried as well. We'll simply erase the erroneous posts. His IP address is easy to discern

I'm late to the game on this, but I don't think the Blue Jackets will eb near the bottom this season. Good coaching, a full season's worth, will help them improve, and They have a decent top 2 lines IF Zhederev can play like he's capable (a big if). Peca, while washed up, still brings defensive grit and good defensive forward play to the table, which are two things the BJ's have lacked in years past.

They may not make the playoffs, but they'll be better.

1) Nearly every team in the West (outside of Phoenix) can lay claim to being 'better' this year for one reason or the other.
2) Certainly a full season of coaching by Hitch, who we like as a coach will help, but their roster top to bottom does not impress us.

Every season there is a team or two that gets off to a fast start only to crumble when the true test of the rigors of the 82 game schedule take hold. My team is usually in it all the time so I guess i can see why fans of those teams who haven't been good look at these very early games as evidence that their team is finally better. Lets see where they are on january 1st, then you may have a story to report

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) Vlad: We hardly were expressing a view that those teams cited were suddenly Cup contenders, just that it was a bizarre evening when all those teams predicted to be poor were victorious
2) We agree that over time the schedule tends to favour the better teams, but on any given night its anyone's guess who will win. Thus our not so subtle jab at Mrs Gretzky/all gamblers. Along those lines we're working on another expansion related post. This one with regards to Vegas. look for it later this week.

Mrs. "Botox" Tocchet!!!

FAUX RUMORS said...

1) Wow, you guys are harsh! What did janet ever do to you? LOL
2) We guess Pilot living clser to her would know beter than us, but come on she's a non entity, is she not?

Antzmarching said...

In putting this post/chapter to rest, YES Faux, she is definitely insignificant...
