1) An amazing story we uncovered a few days ago. Evidently the NY Rangers have inquired to the NHL if they could receive "Compensation" for the loss of the recent death of 2006 1st round draft pick Alexei Cherepanov. According to the NY Post's Larry Brooks, Rangers GM, Glen Sather is submitting that the team should receive the 17th selection in the second round of June's draft as compensation for losing Cherepanov, the 17th overall selection in the 2006 Draft who died in Russia on Oct. 13 while playing for Omsk.
2) Evidently Glen Sather raised the issue at the general managers' meeting in Chicago three weeks ago, citing CBA Article 8.3 (b) that stipulates that "compensatory picks be awarded to teams unable to sign first-round draft picks". "The question is with the one parenthetical phrase in Article 8.3 (b) that refers compensation for an unsigned first-round draft pick who is '… again eligible for the Entry Draft or becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent …'.....he is technically eligible to be drafted again next year." said Rangers assistant GM Cam Hope. Hey Cam the guy is Fucking dead! He's not a free agent!
3) So what words come to mind here? Ridiculously lame, heartless, classless, soulless, and stupid, etc. We of course can understand hockey is a business, but this is just sickening on so many levels. For sure if the Rangers win this appeal we wouldn't want to be the player picked with that choice!! Our legal wing of Fauxrumors tell us that they doubt the team will win the argument, that "its a stretch" based upon the verbiage of the CBA. The Rangers certainly must have their own in-house legal eagles to assist them and its doubtful they are saying anything much different. Which brings us to ask Why even frickin' inquire!?!

This is kind of upsetting, coming from an organization that usually conducts itself with class... The Rangers plea is tough to defend... It seems Hope and Sather have lost touch with their priorities here and have placed the mighty dollar ahead of a human life... Too bad!!!
1) Thanks again to FR2 for an interesting post. We agree with Antz here. we're surprised to see the rangers go this route. At least to make it public before knowing the legal implications. Not a good PR move there guys!
I sees ya points on this one there faux, but i think we need to get something for not getting to have this kid no? i don't blame the rangers for trying to get sothing here. too bad if it sounds bad. hey this is bisness!
I think this whole thing is much about nothing. Who cares about this other than the egocentric ny press and their fans?
My opinion is that they shouldn't get a thing here, but if they do, big deal. A late second round pick is not going to change things much
1) Rogo: Been a while, welcome back here. We can understand your position as well as FR2's. Perhaps this could have been handle a bit more delicately?
2) Shuck: We don't know about the ego thing, but if you live in the biggest city in North America it is news, no? We do agree though that the pick in of itself is secondary to the issue/story here
Firstly, egocentricism and Glen Sather are synonomous... Furthermore, I believe this is more of a morality issue, as opposed to one involving ego...
Well i don't know how heartless it is.
But it is fricking stupid. Prospects aren't insured. If they die, get injured, lose their interest in the game, or decide to join the circus the team that drafted them is just SOL.
Also:
What's the word with the Clark/Halak rumor? Dater mentioned Clark was being scouted, but threw out Clark for Halak as a possibility. It didn't sound like he had much insight on the deal though and that part was speculation.
1) Too many reasons for that deal to NOT happen:
a) Halak is NOT an improvement over Budaj this season. Perhaps in 2-3 years he might, but those kind of deals are done at the deadline or the draft
b) Cap space, cap space! The Habs don't have room for Clark
Yeah, but the Avs have room for underachieving cap dump... like Dandenault.
And Halak is an improvment over Raycroft
1) At this point Jibble we'd have to say the Avs need a change/trade much more than the Habs do. Montreal is not in danger of falling out of the playoff race like Colorado is right now.
2) Therefore Gainey can wait until closer to the trade deadline to deal one of his big chips(Halak) for either the team's missing piece or injury help.
